In order to make a fingerprint system small and low-cost, yet still secure, silicon-type sensors are necessary. Several technical approaches have been studied scientifically as the basis for this low-cost approach, and the most successful in the market has been the electrical capacitance based approach such as that taken by FPC. Important to the commercialisation of this technology is the fact that well-established CMOS microchip technology can be used. This is power effective and meets low-cost demands in large volume.
